January 10, 2013Book ReviewsTsering Wangchuk

9780099546030“Across many mountains” is an inspiring life journey of three Tibetan women in exile. It is a continuous story of different generation’s struggles in life fighting for survival, happiness and beloved Tibet’s freedom.

As Chinese army sweeps Tibet’s land destroying everything in their way, a young family is forced to flee for safety. Even though India looked like a promised land to many Tibetans, it did not grant an easy life. The journey across dangerous and mystical Himalayas was only the first challenge that mother and her daughters were going to face. Arrival to their destination revealed a sad truth: life was never going to be the same. Unbearable climate, foreign language, lack of money, hard jobs, hunger, and diseases were hardships family had to face each day.
The true story of Tibetan generations lives in exile is told through the youngest of them Yangzom’s eyes. With strange inner emptiness and unexplained longing, Yangzom relives her elders’ experiences. As she watches her mother and grandmother gaze at the horizon of foreign land towards their lost country, each of them lost in thoughts, Yangzom sits down to tell their story to the world…
Courage, belief and inner strength to stand up once again after your loved ones, home, and country are taken away is what this book is about. After decades of destruction and daily struggles, Tibetans still stand strong. At the end of a long journey, family finally finds safety and security in other countries, but Tibet was and always is in their minds and prayers.
