Hong Kong Candlelight Vigil for Tibet Marking 100th Anniversary of the Tibetan Declaration of Independence

Flying Tibetan Flags in front of Chinese liaison in Hong Kong, Marking 100th Anniversary of the Tibetan Declaration of Independence, and a candlelight vigil for the self-immolations of Tibetans since 2009.

February 11 ,2013: Tibetan Losar

The Tibetans follow the lunisolar calendar, which means that the date is indicative of the moon phase and the time of the solar year as well. Losar, the Tibetan New Year is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the calendar. The date of this festival is likely to fall on 11 February in the year 2013.

However, sadly there have been 100 Tibetan self-immolations and the increasingly repressive measures of the Chinese since 2009, the CTA has reaffirmed its resolve to inform and mobilize the international community.

February 13, 2013: 100th Anniversary of Tibet’s declaration as an independent country:

Thubten Gyatso, the 13th Dalai Lama, who was forced to take refuge in British India from 1910–1912, following the Manchu invasion of Tibet, returned to his country after Tibetans expelled the Manchu forces from Tibet, marking the restoration of Tibet’s independence.

The 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet’s independence on February 13, 1913 (8th day, first month, water ox Tibetan year) by making the ‘Tibetan Proclamation of Independence,’ a five-point public statement reasserting Tibetan Independence.

Dalai Lama states: “…Meanwhile, the Manchu empire collapsed. The Tibetans were encouraged to expel the Chinese from central Tibet. I, too, returned safely to my rightful and sacred country, and I am now in the course of driving out the remnants of Chinese troops from DoKham in Eastern Tibet. Now, the Chinese intention of colonizing Tibet under the patron-priest relationship has faded like a rainbow in the sky…”

The year 2013 will mark 100 years since Tibet proclaimed the restoration of its independence. The Manchu army sent troops to Tibet in 1909, prompting the 13th Dalai Lama to escape to India. However, as the Manchu dynasty succumbed to a Chinese revolution at home, Tibetans expelled the Manchu troops from Tibet. The 13th Dalai Lama returned to Tibet and issued a proclamation to mark the restoration of Tibetan independence.

In 2012, Dr. Lobsang Sangay has launched the ‘Solidarity with Tibet’ campaign for 2013. This announcement was made at a press conference on December 5, followed by a speech by Dr. Sangay. In light of the above important days, UNFFT recommends members and supporters to take action to join local Tibet activities to highlight the Tibet issue in the International society.

Please share the event page and add your own plan/action/ideas sothat we can reshare with different country groups via our website and Fb pages.
